Top 10 Tallest New York City Buildings (By Feet)

All of sudden, out of nowhere, New York City is getting some really tall buildings with apartments.  We’re not talking great architecture, but feet, lots and lots of feet, piled high.  We’re flirting with 1,000 feet.  A little less than the Chrysler Building, but still impressive and notable.  That’s the “vicinity” that Extell aimed for at One57 across from Carnegie Hall between Seventh and Sixth Avenues on 57th Street and that Hines Interests is contemplating just to the west of the Museum of Modern Art in its revised plans. These stupendous heights, by New York standards, result from merging together a few zoning lots, a common practice.  We’ll be sure to update this list regularly as the city experiences something of an apartment building height-race.

#1 - New York By Gehry, 8 Spruce Street

This 876-foot-tall, mixed-use tower near city has 903 rental apartments above a six-story public school and was designed by Frank O. Gehry with stainless steel facades, three of which are rippling, and it opened in 2010.

#2 - Trump World Tower, 845 United Nations Plaza

The city's tallest residential building when it was erected in 2001, the 861-foot-high Trump World's sleek, monolithic lines did not quell a community controversy over the fact that it was much taller than the nearby and very important Secretariat Building of the United Nations.

  • Eightteen apartments currently for sale from $995,000 to $39,000,000

#3 - CitySpire, 150 West 56th Street

This 814-foot-high tower with 340 condominium apartments over 24 floors of offices was the first of several very tall, mid-block towers in this area and was designed with a dome at its top to be thematic with the City Center for the Performing Arts on 55th Street, whose air rights it used and which has a much larger dome.

  • Twelve apartments currently for sale from $839,000 to $7,999,000

#4 - One Beacon Court, 151 East 58th Street

This clean-cut, 806-foot-high tower across 58th Street from Bloomingdale's contains the offices of Bloomberg L.P., considerable retail space and 105 condominium apartments.

  • Six apartments currently for sale from $5,800,000 to $26,000,000

#5 - Residences at the Mandarin Oriental, 80 Columbus Circle

The 750-foot-high, twin dark-glass towers of this very major, mixed-use project that was completed in 2004 dominate Columbus Circle has condominium apartments, offices, a Mandarin Oriental Hotel, a curved retail atrium, a major cultural facility, fancy restaurants and, in its basement, a great Whole Foods store.

#6 - Metropolitan Tower, 146 West 57th Street

This 716-foot-tall mixed-use tower was erected by Harry Macklowe and its angled, knife-edge reflective-glass tower is the epitome of samurai sensibility: very beautiful, very elegant, and defiantly strong and proud.

  • Fourteen apartments currently for sale from $1,275,000 to $10,645,000

#7 - The Park Imperial, 230 West 56th Street

With its polished gray granite base housing offices of Random House and its reflective-glass top with 111 condominium apartments, this 684-foot-high building offers its residents surprisingly impressive views of Central Park and midtown.

  • Seven apartments currently for sale from $3,600,000 to $24,000,000

#8 - MiMa, 450 West 42nd Street

Designed by Arquitectonica, the flamboyant Miami-based architectural firm that designed the colorful Westin Hotel further east on 42nd Street, this almost unassuming, 669-foot-high tower has 663 rental apartments, a 669-foot Yotel hotel and the Signature Theater designed by Frank O. Gehry.

#9 - Trump Tower, 721 Fifth Avenue

Donald Trump's signature flagship, this 664-foot-high mixed-use tower is notable for its pink marble waterfall, its fancy retail tenants, and its brilliant design by Der Scutt.

  • Twenty-Four apartments currently for sale from $1,625,000 to $18,000,000

#10 - Silver Towers, 620 West 42nd Street

In recent years, the far west end of 42nd Street has witnessed a major sprouting of tall residential towers, none more stunning than the twin, 653-foot-tall glass rental apartment buildings that soar very nicely above a fabulous and very large "character" sculpted by Tom Otterness.
