135 West 70th Street was originally built in 1927 by Thomas Lamb, and easily distinguished by its Egyptian-style colonnade, polychromed Doric columns, blue-glazed terra cotta entry pavilion, and four seated Pharaonic figures. It was originally used as a meeting place for the Knights of Pythias, who later rented out space in the building to Decca Records. Bill Haley and His Comets recorded "Rock Around the Clock" in the building, and artists like Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., and Buddy Holly also used studios there.

Amidst its conversion to a condominium dubbed The Pythian, many new windows were added around the building's decorative elements. Residential amenities include a new gym, a children's playroom, and private storage. It is well situated near Lincoln Center, Central Park, Riverside Park, popular restaurants, gourmet supermarkets, and the 1/2/3 and B/C trains at 72nd Street.

"One of the city's most interesting buildings, the Pythian at 135 West 70th Street between Broadway and Columbus Avenue is richly decorated in brightly colored, glazed terracotta embellishments depicting figures of antiquity.

The mid-block building was designed by Thomas W. Lamb, one of the country's foremost designers of movie palaces, most of which, sadly, have been destroyed. One of his other works in New York is the Audubon Theater and Ballroom building on Broadway and 165th Street. " Read Carter's Full Review
