Hotel des Artistes, 1 West 67th Street

Co-op located in Upper West Side, between Central Park West & Columbus Avenue

Description of Hotel des Artistes at 1 West 67th Street

Hotel Des Artistes stands at 1 West 67th Street, on a tree-lined block in a district listed National Register of Historic Places, where seven pre-war artist loft buildings stand side by side. Ever since its 1916 completion, the Hotel has been famed among elite luminaries, which once included artist Norman Rockwell, actor Rudolph Valentino, Mayor John V. Lindsay, and many others. The building sits almost directly next to Central Park and offers duplex and triplex apartments with galleries that overlook 22-foot-high living areas with ten-foot-plus windows, and wood-burning fireplaces.

Elegant Gothic tracery and crockets decorate the building from the canopied entrance to battlements and finials that project above the roof terrace in the fashion of a medieval castle. Many units also retain original Gothic decor, which once featured throughout the interiors. Hotel Des Artistes offers amenities that few other co-ops can match, such as an indoor pool, a fitness center with a squash court, and The Leopard at Des Artistes, an in-house restaurant that offers resident catering. The building is serviced by a twenty-four-hour doorman, an elevator operator, concierge, and a live-in superintendent. These perks, combined with the building’s prime Upper West Side location near Lincoln Center and Columbus Circle, easily qualify Hotel Des Artistes as one of the finest apartment buildings in all of New York City.

Carter Horsley's Building Review
"One of the city's most famous and illustrious buildings, the Hotel Des Artistes is the largest "studio" building in the city and was designed as an artist's cooperative apartment building.

The building was developed by Walter Russell several years after a group of artists, included famed Impressionist Childe Hassam, built a "studio" building at 27 West 67th Street." Read Carter's Full Review
