59 West 12th Street Overview

One of the handsomest pre-war apartment houses in Greenwich Village, this 16-story building has a great location in a very desirable neighborhood.It is a block north of the Jefferson Grocery, the real Ray's Pizza, a wonderful magazine store, and the excellent PS 41, two blocks north of the landmark Jefferson Market Courthouse Library and Balducci's, and across the street from the New School for Social Research.This block, 11th, Tenth and Ninth Streets between the Avenue of the Americas and Fifth Avenue are widely considered among the most attractive in the city. The building has a finely detailed, brown brick façade with classical trim, terraces and an imposing and attractive watertank enclosure. It was built in 1931 and converted to a cooperative in 1986. It has 107 apartments and is one block from an express subway station on Seventh Avenue and two blocks from cross-town buses on 14th Street.Its midblock location on one of the most attractive streets in the Lower Fifth Avenue area affords it great views of downtown from its upper floors facing south.
