Axe Threatens Oak Room
By Carter Horsley   |   From Archives Monday, March 14, 2005
Facing a mounting campaign by grass-roots preservationists and union activists to "Save the

Plaza
" from being reduced from an 800-room hotel to a mixed-use luxury condominium with only 150 guest rooms, CEO Miki Naftali is now slated to appear before the Landmarks Commission for plans to repurpose the famed Oak Room, Oak Bar, Palm Court, Grand Ballroom and palatial historic lobbies. Frequented for nearly a century by prime ministers, presidents and celebrities, the fate of the legendary public rooms remains uncertain as 1,000 hotel workers protest imminent lay-offs.
