The Polish Legion of American Veterans has sold the building at 535 Leonard Street in Greenpoint to MDIM LLC for $2.3 million, according to an article today by James Comtois at crains.com.
The red-brick building was formerly a P.S. 59.
The buyer plans to convert the two-story, 13,500-square-foot property, which has two 2,500-square-foot side courtyards, into a residential condominium building with 18 apartments.
The building was used as a school before it was purchased by the Polish Legion and the article maintained that "With the neighborhood's population rapidly changing, the building's owners felt it was a good time to move on."
"Since Greenpoint was changing from a Polish neighborhood to a more ethnically mixed, younger neighborhood, the Legion thought it would be best to sell the property," said Kalmon Dolgin Executive Vice President Neil Dolgin, the article said.
Mr. Dolgin adding that "The new owner hopes to begin construction on the site in early fall."
