However, tax abatements have a way of taking some of the sting out of sticker shock. The 421-a tax exemption program, which lasted from 1971 to 2016, is perhaps the most commonly known. It was established to encourage the development of underutilized property, and the tax breaks were passed on to buyers of units within the buildings. However, buyers are also advised to keep an eye out for J-51 and 421-gtax abatements.
