It has not even been two years since the Empire State Dairy Company Buildings were designated an individual New York City landmark, yet it still appears before the Landmarks Preservation Commission ("Landmarks"). Most recently, the proposal for a 14-story building to rise just behind the landmarked building has been approved (h/t Brownstoner).
In April, Landmarks rejected plans for a new 14-story building that would cantilever over the historic structure at the expense of the dairy's chimney. While commissioners' reactions to the cantilever ranged from outright dislike to indifference, everyone agreed that the chimney needed to stay. Dattner Architects took this feedback to heart, and renderings in a presentation show that the cantilever is out and the chimney has stayed in.

Just as before, the new building is poised to rise 14 stories high on the site of two non-landmarked buildings and a parking lot. Plans filed with the city earlier this summer show that it will ultimately hold 336 affordable apartments, over 30,000 square feet of retail space, and a community facility. Moreover, the developer and designer seek to install a new storefront entry in the landmarked building and restore the windows, pediment, signage, and pastoral mosaics that brought the Empire State Dairy Company Buildings to prominence.
The Empire State Dairy Company Buildings refer to a collection of buildings at 2840 Atlantic Avenue. The Renaissance/Revival style buildings were designed by Theobold Englehardt circa 1906-1907, and the Abstracted Classicist style buildings with Secessionist details were designed by Otto Strack around 1914-1915. More recently, the complex was sold for $16.75 million in September 2018 to HP Brooklyn Dairy Housing Development Fund Company, a part of the non-profit Housing Partnership Development Corporation.
