For many New Yorkers, an apartment on Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, or Central Park is thought to be reserved for only the city's wealthiest. However, HDFC co-ops all over New York have emerged as a beacon of hope for low- and middle-income buyers. These apartments are not necessarily easy to find, but well worth the search for the chance to live in a dream neighborhood at a price to match. We've offered some prime examples below, and don't forget to check our map at the bottom.

What is an HDFC Co-op?

HDFC units were created several decades ago as a way for tenants in poorly managed buildings to take control of the property and form cooperatives. The city sold these apartments to residents for a mere $250 a piece. Obviously they no longer trade for that price, but they do often sell for far less than what a comparable market rate unit in the same neighborhood would.
