On one side of the iconic George Washington Bridge is Washington Heights in Manhattan, and on the other side? Most know the answer is New Jersey but many don't often venture to Fort Lee, a lovely suburban community only minutes away from the big city.

You'll find small-town charm at the mom-and-pop stores on Main Street, and big-city experiences like diverse cuisine and high-rise living. It sits atop the Hudson Palisades and the fully established community has an identity of its own, but there's no denying developers aim to attract Manhattanites, too. Closest to the bridge are new projects including a pair of 47-story rental towers called The Modern from SJP Properties, and also a new self-supporting neighborhood concept called Hudson Lights from Tucker Development and designed by Arquitectonica.

Completed in 2016, the mixed-use Hudson Lights development comprises nearly 1 million-square-feet of residential, retail and entertainment offerings - allowing residents of the upscale homes to enjoy a brand-new walkable environment right outside their door. Fort Lee, officially a borough of Bergen County in New Jersey, is just over 2.5 square miles and the entire community is relatively walkable compared to most U.S. towns of 35,000 - the approximate population of Fort Lee in the 2010 census.

The 276 luxury residences are located inside a 12-story structure addressed 2030 Hudson Street and come in studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts. The website for the rentals shows several units are available with incentives of up to 2 months free; listings on CityRealty show one-bedrooms from $2,475/month, two-bedrooms from $3,995/month and three-bedrooms from $6,650/month.

The Marketing Directors handles leasing and marketing for the homes, which have designer kitchens with Bosch and Frigidaire Energy Star stainless steel appliances and custom cabinetry. Countertops are in a neutral quartz and many extend to convenient breakfast bars.

There is white oak flooring and LED recessed lighting, and expansive windows yield panoramic views on upper floors. Walk-in closets and the option of a private terrace are nice perks, and the baths boast imported Italian tile, cultured marble countertops, and Kohler fixtures and appliances.

Residents arrive at the property through a modern marquee and into a contemporary lobby with a fireplace, marble floor and modern lighting. And while the shops and retailers at Hudson Lights are open to the public, resident-only amenities are inside the tower.

Most impressive is the outdoor pool and sun deck with club-like lounge areas and big-sky views. Lifestyle amenities include a state-of-the-art fitness center with a yoga studio, a catering kitchen and dining room, a media lounge, and a children's playroom. On-site parking is available.

The new community has a mix of shops, markets, restaurants and entertainment. The eight-screen iPic dine-in theater is a nice night out, and conveniences like CVS and Capital One are at the complex too. If going out to eat at great restaurants is what you're looking for, check out City Perch Kitchen + Bar, Anthony Francos Pizza and Malmoun's.
