In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, New York City is prepared to open up to 100 miles of streets to pedestrians. Specific streets and enforcement have not yet been announced, but City and State reports that this is expected to be similar to the street closures that took place around Rockefeller Center during the 2019 holiday season. These would be enacted to make room for proper social distancing, and this isn't the only change in the works: Outdoor seating is being considered to allow restaurants to safely reopen, a strategy that is currently playing out in Lithuania. Councilman Andrew Cohen has already introduced legislation to waive all sidewalk cafe fees for the remainder of 2020.
Some New Yorkers are excited about these changes, seeing them as a long time overdue and steps towards a more permanently pedestrian-friendly city. However, car owners are notably warier, having had a tough time parking in recent years. A NY1 report from January 2017 found that in Manhattan alone, and only south of 125th Street, the city eliminated at least 2,330 parking spaces to make way for bike lanes and bike-sharing stations.

At the end of 2019, a Department of Transportation analysis for the New York Post found that approximately 6,100 parking spaces were eliminated, removed for part of the day, or turned into delivery zones. And just days before the city went on lockdown, the Department of Sanitation was getting ready to announce new initiatives to get garbage bags off the sidewalks and into sealed, on-street containers that logic dictates would be put in spaces once reserved for parking.
As parking spots get eaten up to make way for these new initiatives, it is natural for car owners to wonder if there is a place for them, literally and figuratively, in this new normal. Developers throughout the five boroughs have recognized this and made deeded parking an amenity in their buildings, incorporating features like automated parking and furnished waiting rooms. To move into one of these buildings is to never have to worry about alternate side-street parking or shoveling your way out on a snowy day again, and we highlight some listings below.
