Ahead of this year's fall opening, we have a look at what the first phase of the Market Line will be serving up. Delancey Street Associates (DSA) has unveiled new renderings of the 150,000-square-foot market set to anchor the Lower East Side mega-development Essex Crossing, and announced the first nine vendors that will be joining what will soon be the largest market in NYC and one of the largest in the world. The new vendors will join the current vendors of the 77-year-old Essex Street Market, also set to open in Essex Crossing later this year.
Many of the announced vendors tie into the proud immigrant heritage of the Lower East Side – from a third generation German grocer to an authentic Mexican tortillería – the Market Line is poised to have it all.

Ukrainian pierogiesOverall, the Market Line will feature two indoor parks, a beer garden, 20 retail spaces, and 150 food vendors. Additionally, one-third of the market will be devoted to local arts, including a gallery and performance space.
But as for what we can expect later this year, the first phase (including Essex Street Market) will feature over 70 vendors and be housed in the first and cellar levels of 115 Delancey Street, a 25-story mixed-income residential building that launched its affordable housing lottery in December last year. There will be two more phases and completion is expected for 2020.
SHoP Architects for Market Line
The buzzed-about Essex Crossing will include 1.9 million square feet of residential, commercial, and community space on nine sites – a major transformation considering they had been mostly vacant since 1967. Essex Crossing will notably be the new home of the International Center of Photography, which is opening in 2019 at the project's first condominium – 242 Broome Street. The SHoP Architects-designed building will welcome its first residents this spring. Essex Crossing is expected to be fully completed by 2024.
