A few boiling days this weekend notwithstanding, New York is approaching a time of year when the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, and everyone is eager to be outside. And where better to enjoy a sunny day than New York’s backyard? Central Park is perfect for going for a run or bike ride, taking an outdoor workout class, or simply soaking up the sun in Sheep’s Meadow. This year’s SummerStage lineup has recently been announced, as has that for the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park–this year’s shows will include a new production of Richard III featuring Danai Gurira as the title character and a production of As You Like It adapted by Shaina Taub, artist-in-residence and writer of acclaimed musical Suffs.

Additionally, as if taking a cue from Rockefeller Center, which turned its iconic ice-skating rink into the retro-inspired Flipper’s Roller Boogie Palace for the summer, Central Park’s Wollman Rink will become The DiscOasis starting June 16. The roller rink is being designed by Tony nominee David Korins and will offer nightly theatrical shows, roller-dance performances, open skate sessions, and food and beverage service. Groovemaster Nile Rodgers, who has worked with Madonna, David Bowie, and Lady Gaga, is curating a special playlist for each night’s local DJ. Tickets may be purchased here, and a portion of proceeds will support the We Are Family Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to nurturing the visions of young people making positive change in the world.
Wollman Rink will not offer the only skating in Central Park–construction began on the Harlem Meer Center (formerly the Lasker Rink and Pool) last year. The new facility will include a larger-than-Olympic pool as well as a full-scale ice rink and a boardwalk through freshwater plantings that will evoke the sense of skating directly on the Meer. As completion is estimated for 2024, it is a little soon to say whether it will one day pivot to roller skating.
New Yorkers all over the city and tourists all over the world are more than happy to make a trek to enjoy Central Park. But for some lucky people, the park could literally be their backyard. Below, we take a look at park-facing listings. While Central Park is the biggest name in town, it is not by any means the only one–model/actress Cara Delevigne is reportedly in contract to buy Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon’s triplex on Gramercy Park. In addition to the saloon room, soundproof pantry, and secret playroom, the apartment comes with a key to New York’s only private park.

Over a year after comedian Jimmy Fallon listed his four-unit combination triplex on Gramercy Park, Gimme Shelter announced that Cara Delevigne is in contract to buy the apartment in an off-market deal. Sources say it is in contract for “a few million less” than the original listing price of $15 million, but the home has nevertheless come a long way from the one-bedroom apartment Mr. Fallon purchased for $850K in 2002.

From the Listing:
Celebrating the bones and architecture of the famed 34 Gramercy Park East, while transforming the space into a singularly enhancing home, this jewel box is perched atop the southwest corner of the historic landmark. Stern-designed 1228 Madison Avenue with his son and daughter-in-law, George and Callie Zoitas. Appropriately enough, the apartment features an eat-in kitchen with a center island, full-height pantry, and a suite of Wolf, Miele, and Sub-Zero appliances.

While Hester Diamond was well known for her art collection that included works by the old masters and modern visionaries alike, her apartment on Central Park West was a work of art in its own right. She and her husband Harold rented in The Eldorado in the 1960s, and purchased their duplex and an adjoining 19th-floor apartment when the building went co-op. Decades later, Ms. Diamond acquired another adjoining apartment on the 18th floor and further enlarged the apartment. Her son Michael Diamond, also known as Beastie Boys founding member Mike D, told The New York Times, “Pretty much every room in the house changed its function at least once during the 50 years my mom lived there.” It is now on the market following her death in early 2020. (Sorry, the art isn’t included–it has been sold and divided among surviving family members.)
