For all the architecturally adventurous facades and jaw-dropping amenities that newly constructed condominiums have to offer, the interiors of the new apartments tend to be bland white boxes with little character or charm. This is where condo conversions of industrial or commercial buildings come in. These homes have often been finished with top-of-the-line appliances, finishes, and technology, though not at the expense of historic details that are impossible to replicate.
A prime example can be found at The Machinery Exchange, a Nolita building that once served as a horse stable for the nearby Police Building. It is now home to well-heeled buyers like Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, model Katrin Thormann, and her husband, Compass broker Nick Gavin, who closed on a two-bedroom duplex in 2016. Their home is rich in Old World details like exposed brick walls, steel-framed windows, architectural columns, and, in one Instagram commenter's words, "That ceiling is goals," with its soaring height and exposed pine beams.

The couple have listed their apartment for $2.695 million, but will not be moving far - the New York Post notes that they are in contract to buy a four-bedroom unit in the same building in an off-market deal. Theirs is the only availability in the building, but far from the only availability with exposed wood-beam ceilings in New York. We found listings all over Manhattan and Brooklyn.
