Acclaimed architect Thierry Despont's New York City portfolio includes the centennial restoration of the Statue of Liberty, renovation of the Cartier Mansion, the Woolworth Tower, the revamp of the Palm Court at The Plaza, the interiors of 53W53, and Casa Cipriani. His personal real estate tastes, though, are a bit more down-to-earth - about 26 years ago, Mr. Despont purchased 182 Franklin Street, a Tribeca store and loft building dating back to 1915 and counting several food businesses, including two cheese companies, among its previous tenants. A 2015 Vanity Fair article notes that the townhouse is down the street from his firm's offices, and that he has applied his eye for design to its conversion to a single-family house.
When Mr. Despont listed the townhouse for $25 million in October 2021, broker Rueben Schatz of Douglas Elliman told The Real Deal, "It's just a good time to sell in this market." He may have spoken too soon - the townhouse's price has just been reduced to $19,500,000. It is among the total of 213 condos, co-ops, condops, and townhouses for sale throughout New York City that experienced price reductions from February 1-7, 2023.
