Even as Broadway starts to reopen, theater lovers have a surfeit of alternate viewing options. An Emmy-nominated performance of Hamilton can be streamed on Disney+; a performance of Come From Away hit Apple+ TV on September 10; Diana will premiere on Netflix on October 1, two months before its planned December 1 Broadway reopening; and a film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen will hit movie theaters on September 24, months before the musical that inspires it re-opens on December 11.
However, there is no substitute for the energy of a live performance and the audience enjoying it. Hadestown and Waitress welcomed audiences back on September 2, and Waitress broke the single-performance sales record at the Ethel Barrymore theater. Crowd-pleasers Hamilton, Wicked, The Lion King, and Chicago reopened on September 14, and other shows will follow suit in the coming weeks and months.

“Without Broadway, New York would never come back economically” - Senator Charles Schumer

It is important to note that Broadway is not simply a pleasant diversion for locals and tourists alike. According to a PBS Newshour report in February 2021, Broadway is responsible for nearly 100,000 jobs in New York City and has an economic impact of nearly $15 billion. Moreover, a fall 2019 report released by the New York City Comptroller’s office observes that the shows generate employment for administrators, costume designers, sound technicians, and others whose names do not appear on the marquees. The effects also ripple out to hotels, restaurants, parking garages, and other local services that accommodate theatergoers.
In honor of the reopening and the Tony Awards set to air on September 26, we take a look at the shows that were generating the most excitement when Broadway went dark. Tourists typically come from all over the world to see shows like these, but residents of these new developments live close enough to walk to the theaters. In addition to the central location, they enjoy eye-catching architecture, top-of-the-line interiors, and well-thought amenities.

The Broadway adaptation of Moulin Rouge! is up for 14 Tony Awards, which includes male lead Aaron Tveit as the sole nominee in his category. Between actors falling ill and the departure of Karen Olivo (original Satine), the months of closure were a tumultuous time for most of the cast and crew. However, the show is poised to return in a blaze of glory with Natalie Mendoza as Satine (she also appeared in the film that inspired the show).

Mrs. Doubtfire musical Image via Mrs. Doubtfire Broadway
The musical adaptation of Mrs. Doubtfire was only three previews in when Broadway went dark last spring, putting the production on hold and leading the younger stars to fear aging out of their roles. But that is not to say the cast and crew sat idly at home. The creative team took advantage of the time to scrap three numbers in favor of a new opening, and the writers aged up the child characters to keep the actors portraying them in the show.
