When pioneering plastics company Plaxall moved the business to Long Island City, its principals already recognized the prime waterfront location and began to purchase and rehabilitate nearby properties. More than 70 years later, Plaxall manages over one million square feet of space in the surrounding area. Now the legendary company is looking to develop a mixed-use district on their properties surrounding Anable Basin, a 149-year-old manmade inlet.
If a rezoning is approved, several blocks around Anable Basin is poised to become home to 335,000 square feet of space designed for creative production and light industrial uses. The plan also includes approximately 5,000 housing units (25% of which will be affordable), a 700+-seat public school which would be gifted to the city of New York, and a pedestrian-friendly esplanade designed to link the parks along the western Queens waterfront.
