Earlier this fall, the development and architecture firm of Tamarkin Co. in partnership with CL Investment Group kicked-off sales at 555 West End Avenue, a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse on the Upper West Side reconceived into 13 three- to five-bedroom condos. Dripping with historic character, each of the one-of-kind apartments has 12 to 20-foot-high ceilings, transom windows and signature details by Tamarkin that embody their warm, placid aesthetic.

To further convey the comfort the project will bestow, as well as the seamless integration of modern amenities with pre-war charm, the team enlisted New York-based designer Charlie Ferrer to create a model residence. The home is set within a five-bedroom, 4.5-bath unit that boasts 12-foot-high ceilings, tall picture windows, and an alluring kitchen fit for a magazine but still begs to be used.

“The marriage of Tamarkin Co.’s signature spare modernist aesthetic with the historical bones of 555 West End Avenue provided the ideal envelope for me to create something that felt both inspired and fresh,” said Charlie Ferrer, Founder of FERRER.

FERRER fused statement 20th century pieces with contemporary designs to create cohesive interiors that are sophisticated and warm. "Working in tandem with insiders’ dealer Pascal Boyer, FERRER’s vintage edit for this project amounts to a compelling survey of important Italian and French design, lending each room a unique feel."

The furniture and lighting collection includes vintage designs such as a coffee table by Jacques Adnet from 1949 and a pair of Raphael Raffel’s “Ambassador” armchairs dating from 1950, alongside contemporary designs, such as the pair of Andrew Hughes’ Porto table lamps specifically commissioned for the master bedroom. The soft highly-textural palette supports statement design pieces and the anchoring artworks, which include Labirinto, a monumental abstract painting by Marco Lorenzetto and Transition #8, a large-format contemporary photograph by Ricardo Hoseguera.

Rich fabrics and floor coverings by ALT for Living, Holland & Sherry, Mitchell Denburg, De Le Cuona, Loro Piana, Pierre Frey, and Sandra Jordan bring warmth and texture to the five-bedroom residence.

"Vintage and custom pieces intermix with supple textiles and floor coverings throughout the project. The result is an urbane home that is uniquely comfortable, highly livable and inspiring in its eclecticism," said Charlie Ferrer.

Kitchen

The kitchen has solid white oak cabinetry handcrafted by Christopher Peacock, Pietra Cardosa stone floors, polished Arabescato marble slab countertops and backsplashes, and Wolf, Sub-Zero and Miele appliances.

Master baths feature hand-selected Calacatta Gold marble slabs, custom white oak vanities by Christopher Peacock, and Lefroy Brooks fixtures.

“When I first set foot in this historic building, I immediately fell in love with its bones and the incredible light that floods the spaces,” said Cary Tamarkin, Founder and Chairman of Tamarkin Co. “We brought in FERRER to translate those qualities into a beautiful residence that is special and luxurious."

Currently listed are four remarkable apartments priced from $7.9 million to $18 million. They include "The Library" unit, which features a 42-foot long great room with arched windows and 18.5-foot-high ceilings. Also up for grabs is the project's showpiece apartment dubbed "The Solarium." It boasts a 19-foot-high arched, skylit ceiling that connects to a gracious 500-square-foot terrace with views of Riverside Park and the Hudson River.
Buyers will enjoy amenities such as a 24/7 attended lobby with refrigerated storage, bike room and stroller valet, a state-of-the-art gym with natural lighting, a recreation room with a wet bar, pool table, dartboard, lounge chairs and television, and private individual storage rooms.
