SKY: NYC's Largest Rental Tower, Shows Off New Nighttime Lighting

The Moinian Group’s 60-story residential tower, SKY at 605 West 42nd Street, soars 676 feet in air, occupying lofty territory indeed. Designed by Goldstein, Hill & West, the glass-and-metal-sheathed tower is located less than a block from the Hudson River waterfront and within walking distance to Hudson Yards and Times Square. The building officially opened this past June, and boasts an impressive nighttime lighting installation that emanates a twinkling strobe feature at its crown and bold lines of white light softening the tower's formidable silhouette.

Light manufacturing firm Focus Lighting played a pivotal role in the tower’s illlumination, crowning the building with its tiara of sparkling lights. According to an April New York Magazine article by Justin Davidson, the light fixtures initially created a spotlight so intense that it shone into high-rise interiors miles away. Davidson writes, “Alerted to the problem, the team dimmed the display and, more important, placed diffusing filters over the fixtures to soften the interrogational effect. The result, while still not final, is a skyscraper that takes its place in a spangled skyline rather than trying to outshine the entire city.”

Of the tower’s 1116 no fee residences, there are currently ten for rent, with studios starting from $3,373/month, 1-bedrooms starting from $3,770/month, and 2-bedrooms starting from $7,015/month. It appears that each retains the special offer of one month’s free rent on new 13-month leases. Designed by the Rockwell Group, interiors feature Italian-crafted kitchens, porcelain bathrooms, and full-sized window walls that maximize gorgeous views. Wood floors come in one of two stains, “dusk” or “dawn,” continuing with the tower's light-oriented themes.
