Features
Throughout the world, architecture enthusiasts have long appreciated Pritzker Prize laureate Alvaro Siza’s style that has been described as poetic modernism. His purity of design, sculptural qualities, and embrace of natural surroundings come through in his intimately scaled museums and cultural institutions, but his first United States project embraces these qualities while bringing quite a change: 611 West 56th Street, a residential condominium, will rise 35 stories and 420 feet tall. A teaser site has just gone up, and with it, new renderings of the tower’s monolithic shape and limestone façade.
611 West 56th Street is being co-developed by Sumaida + Khurana and LENY. Sumaida + Khurana is no stranger to working with Pritzker Prize laureates, having partnered with Tadao Ando on 152 Elizabeth Street, and LENY’s global portfolio includes the Rafael Vinoly-designed 277 Fifth Avenue.
With no more than two apartments per floor, residents of all 80 custom one- through four-bedroom apartments can be assured of excellent privacy. They can also enjoy unobstructed views of the Hudson River, Hudson Yards, and the celebrated Midtown Manhattan skyline. Many residences will offer direct elevator entry, and duplex maisonettes will feature private terraces. Interiors will be designed by Gabellini Shephard, which is known for its work at 152 Elizabeth Street, the renovation of Rockefeller Center's iconic Rainbow Room, and the west tower of Chelsea skyline standout The XI.
Building amenities are expected to include a state-of-the-art fitness center, entertainment space, a children’s playroom, and a landscaped roof garden and sun deck. An accepted offering plan did not list a sellout price, but prices will be confirmed when sales begin in the fall.
Mr. Siza’s building is taking shape in an architecturally adventurous section of Midtown West. It is just down the block from Waterline Square, where each condominium tower is designed by a prominent architect. On the rental front, The Max and VIA 57 West have made dramatic statements.
