Around this time last year, the de Blasio administration launched the first phase of NYC Ferry — an ambitious transportation initiative that allows commuters to ferry between several waterfront neighborhoods for a low cost of $2.75 per ride. The two active routes comprise the old East River Ferry route and serves Midtown East, Long Island City, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, DUMBO, and the Financial District; and a second brand-new course (launched last summer) provides service between the Rockaways, South Brooklyn, and Astoria.

Despite the forecast of rising sea levels and an increasing threat of cyclones, waterfront development is surging in the city. A little more than a decade ago, the Bloomberg administration spearheaded the vision (and eventual rezonings) to reconnect New Yorkers to the Brooklyn and Queens shorelines. Since then, enclaves of high-rise communities have risen in LIC’s Hunters Point South and Williamsburg-Greenpoint waterfronts.

This current administration’s NYC Ferry and BQX streetcar hopes to further catalyze new residential and commercial development, and expand the opportunities to areas farther out from the city’s historic core. By summer 2018, the network is scheduled to be expanded to the Upper and Lower East Side, as well as the Soundview neighborhood in the Bronx.

So, with the incredible investment to the city’s waterfront areas, making them both more desirable and accessible, we thought many New Yorkers would be taking second looks at these once-obscure locations to live and invest.
