Features
Over the past few decades, DUMBO has blossomed from a forgotten post-industrial district o a highly sought-after destination for both living and dining. Both those goals converge at 1 John Street, a 12-story condominium where Celestine, a new waterfront restaurant, has just opened on the ground floor.
The Mediterranean-inspired pastas and grilled fish dishes look irresistible, but one highlight not on the menu are the views of Lower Manhattan and the East River. This gorgeous setting seems tailor-made for special occasions, but Celestine’s goal is to be a neighborhood staple. As owner Julian Brizzi says (h/t Eater New York), “We are serving a community, whether they’re visiting for a day or living in the building.”

At 1 John Street, Celestine isn’t the only place to enjoy the waterfront views. All loft-like residences have oversized windows that look out on spectacular views of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge, and Manhattan skyline; other features include 10-foot ceilings, in-unit washer/dryers, and spa-like master baths. The kitchens are equipped with oak islands, full-height cabinetry, and top-of-the-line Gaggenau appliances, but Celestine is an elevator ride away for when residents need a break. Official amenities include a landscaped roof deck, parkside lounge, gym, package room, and bike room. The building quickly attracted interest when it opened in 2016, and remaining residences start at $4.559 million. There is also a rental on the market for $11,000/month.
