NYC Living This Week - 4th of July Edition

JULY 3, 2012

4th of July celebrations and summer traditions offer plenty of choices for midweek holiday fun.

The Macy’s fireworks – with live performances by Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney – will be West Side-only again this year, but there are plenty of ways to snag a spot with a Hudson view and good company. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is throwing a big viewing bash on the monster aircraft carrier’s flight deck. For a more private mooring join the North River Historic Ship Society for an exclusive viewing and party on the rooftop of Pier 66 Maritime at 26th Street, featuring intimate outdoor dining and cocktails. If you prefer your boat to actually be moving, New York Water Taxi, Circle Line, Spirit Cruises and Schooner Adirondack offer fireworks cruises. For landlubbers, viewing parties are happening in Midtown at Sky Room rooftop lounge (the highest rooftop bar in the city), Hudson Terrace and Pier 92 (with food trucks and Wyclef Jean). There is also an event in Chelsea at the Dream Downtown hotel roof terrace (with a lobster boil to feed hungry revelers). To find out who’s lucky enough to have front-row seats without leaving home see our list of top buildings for viewing the 4th of July fireworks.

In (somewhat) less explosive Independence Day events, the famous Nathan’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest chews up Coney Island; the Mets and the Cyclones both play on home turf; free music and yoga happen in Lincoln Square; and the New York Philharmonic presents “Summertime Classics: A New York Fourth,” at Avery Fisher Hall.
