The Packard CLOSE
This modest, red-brick apartment building at 176 West 86th Street boasts some impressively tall ceilings and an eclectic and not unnattractive design.
The 11-story building has an entrance on the cross-street where its frontage is quite narrow.
The entrance has a two-story limestone base and limestone window surrounds on the third story on the cross-street, but only a one-story limestone base on its long frontage on the avenue where it also has double stringcourses at the second story, a quite elegant touch.
Other nice touches are corner quoins on a couple of terrace parapets and a plain decorative element at the east end of the top of the cross-street facade intended, presumably, to demarcate the building's entrance below.
It was built as a condominium in 1985 and has 47 apartments of which 37 are studios. It has a few terraces, a doorman and consistent fenestration, but no balconies.
This neighborhood has been steadily improving and is convenient to many restaurants and interesting boutiques. There is excellent crosstown bus service and a subway station is one long block away at Broadway and 86th Street.
It is about midway between Central Park and Riverside Drive.
