This impressive apartment building at 983 Park Avenue on the northeast corner at 83rd Street has considerable "light and air" because it is across the avenue from the Roman Catholic Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola and its school and related facilities.

The 14-story, red-brick building was erected in 1925 and was converted to a cooperative in 1981.

It has 55 apartments.

It was designed by Schwartz & Gross, whose other buildings on the avenue include 470, 525, 885, 888, 911, 930, 941, 970, 1045, 1070, 1095, 1125 and 1165.

Bottom Line

A red-brick, pre-war designed by Schwartz & Gross with large apartments that is convenient to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Description

The building has a very deep and long lobby. It also has a two-story-high, limestone base with arched windows, and a cornice two floors below its top that gets smaller in the central portion of the building’s long side-street façade.

The building has a masonry quoins and white window surrounds on the third floor and some on the top two floors.

The building has sidewalk landscaping, protruding air-conditioners and inconsistent fenestration.

The building has a doorman and elevator attendants and a gym and a basketball court.

Apartment 14B is a three-bedroom unit with a 31-foot-long entrance gallery that leads to a 26-foot-wide living room with a fireplace that connects to a 19-foot-long library and a 19-foot-long dining room next to a 13-foot-long pantry and an 18-foot-long kitchen with a breakfast room and a 10-foot-long laundry.

Apartment 4B has a three-bedroom unit with a 34-foot-long entrance gallery that opens onto a 26-foot-long living room, a 19-foot-long library and a 16-foot-dining room that is next to a 28-foot-long kitchen and a 10-foot-long maid’s room.

Apartment 3C is a four-bedroom unit that has a 17-foot-long entrance gallery that opens onto a 27-foot-long living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a 23-foot-long dining room next to an 18-foot-long kitchen with a 15-foot-wide breakfast area and a 10-foot-wide maid’s room.  The unit also has a 13-foot-wide family room.

Apartment 10D is a two-bedroom unit with an entry foyer that leads to a 17-foot-long gallery that leads to a 31-foot-long living room with a dining area and a fireplace and an 18-foot-long kitchen.  The unit also has a 14-foot-wide library.

Apartment 4A is a three-bedroom unit that has a 21-foot-long entrance gallery that leads to a 26-foot-wide living room with a fireplace, a 20-foot-long library and a 20-foot-wide dining room next to a 21-foot-long kitchen that leads to a long laundry and a maid’s room.

Location

The building is close to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue and there are other schools and religious institutions nearby. Cross-town buses run on 86th Street and an express subway station is at Lexington Avenue and 86th Street.
