Last call at Mars Bar means a sweet deal for building tenants; The city launches a new East River ferry
The hand-scrawled “Dive in,” sign outside Mars Bar at 11-17 Second Avenue may have been a familiar East Village site for decades, but the infamous dive will finally close its doors this August to make way for new condos like the ones that now cast long shadow from all sides. There’s a bright side for the 1920s brick tenement building’s soon-to-be displaced residents, though. When construction is finished, they’ll be able to purchase units in the shiny new 12-story luxury condo building—for $10 apiece.
A much-anticipated new ferry service has begun connecting the circuit between 34th Street in Manhattan, Long Island City in Queens, Greenpoint, South Williamsburg and Dumbo in Brooklyn (there’s an Atlantic Avenue stop on summer Fridays) and Wall Street in Manhattan. The city-subsidized, privately-run ferry is free until June 24. After that it’s $4 for a one-way trip, with monthly passes available for $140.
