Onyx Chelsea - 261 West 28th Street: CARTER'S REVIEW

This spiffy condominium building in Chelsea was designed by FXFowle for Bronfman Haynes Real Estate Partners in 2007.

It is distinguished by its sharp-edged Miesian design with many corner windows and floor-to-ceiling windows and most notably by its vertical lighting facade accents that run up the center of its avenue and sidestreet facades. These accents are reminiscent, of course, of the more random and shorter thing lighting elements employed on the tower portion of the great Porter House on the southeast corner of Ninth Avenue and 15th Street, one of the modern landmarks of Chelsea.

This building, which is known as Onyx Chelsea and is located at 261 West 28th Street on the corner at Eighth Avenue, has two roofdecks, radiant heating flooring in bathrooms, a concierge, a doorman, a fitness center, a garage, washers and dryers in each apartment, and Sub-zero refrigerators and Bosch and Viking kitchen appliances. The building also has central air-conditioning and some terraces.

It is across the street from the Fashion Institute of Technology and several blocks south of Madison Avenue Garden and Penn Station.

Chelsea, of course, abounds in many restaurants, nightclubs and art galleries.
