The Steiner Building, 257 West 17th Street: Review and Ratings

between Seventh Avenue & Eighth Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 257 West 17th Street by Carter Horsley

This very handsome, pre-war, mid-block building between Seventh and Eighth Avenues was converted to 32 condominium apartments in 1998. It was built in 1905.

The 9-story, white-brick building has a handsome cornice and a two-story limestone base.

It has a fine Chelsea location on a nice, solid block that is convenient to many restaurants and boutiques and the Joyce Theater two blocks away on Eighth Avenue.

The first floor retail spaces on both sides of this building's entrance are occupied by a very nice D'Agostino's supermarket.

The building, designed in an Italian-Renaissance-palazzo style with quoins, has consistent fenestration, a doorman, sidewalk landscaping and no garage.
