This handsome white-brick, pre-war, cooperative apartment building at 61 Irving Place on the southwest corner at 17th Street originally housed the National Hospital for Speech Disorders. 

The building is known as The Gramercy. 

It has a prime location close to Gramercy Park and Union Square as well as many restaurants. 

The building dates to 1899.

Bottom Line

A very handsome, pre-war building with fireplaces and a canopied entrance and a prime and central location in the very popular Gramercy Park/Union Square neighborhood.

Description

At one point, two stories were added to the building. 

The building has a canopied, five-step-up entrance with large granite side walls and a one-story rusticated limestone base. 

Windows are deeply inset and there are bandcourses above the first and fifth floors and a large cornice above the sixth floor.

Amenities

The building has a part-time doorman, a canopied entrance, an elevator and basement storage. 

It has no roof deck, no concierge, no balconies, and no garage.

Apartments

Apartments have high ceilings and some have fireplaces. 

Apartment 6A is a two-bedroom duplex with a double-height, 31-foot-long living/dining room with a fireplace and a 12-foot-long, pass-through kitchen and one bedroom on the lower level and a 17-foot-long master suite with a 11-foot-long dressing room and a 9-foot-long sauna on the upper level. 

Apartment 8A is a one-bedroom unit that has a 19-foot-long living/dining room with a corner fireplace and a skylight, a 9-foot-long pass-through kitchen next to a 14-foot-long skylit sun room with a 14-foot-long terrace. 

Apartment 2A is a two-bedroom unit with an entry foyer and a 21-foot-long living room with a curved wall and an enclosed kitchen. 

Apartment 1B has a foyer with a two-step-up, 18-foot-long living room with a curved wall and a 7-foot-long dining area next to an enclosed 8-foot-long kitchen and two-step-up hall to the 13-foot-long bedroom.

History

The building was originally the Gramercy Exchange building of the New York Telephone Company. 

It was subsequently acquired by the National Hospital for Speech Disorders.
