Big Digs: The High Line

DECEMBER 15, 2009

We’ve been hearing about the High Line development for years; here are some facts about what it is and why this big dig’s important.

The High Line is a 1.45 mile park located on Manhattan’s West Side, from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. When all sections are complete, the High Line will be a 1.5 mile park running through the West Side neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen.

Friends of the High Line is the non-profit conservancy charged with raising private funds for the park and overseeing its maintenance and operations based on an agreement with the Parks Department.

The new park features an integrated landscape designed by landscape architects James Corner Field Operations with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, combining meandering concrete pathways with naturalistic plantings, fixed and movable seating, lighting, and special features. Hotel developer Andre Balazs recently completed the 337-room modernist Standard Hotel, which straddles the High Line at West 13th Street. The Highline Ballroom (at 431 West 16th Street) is a venue featuring new and classic live music and other arts and cultural events.
