Bright Lights, Big City: The Best Skyline Viewing Spots

MARCH 8, 2011

Nothing symbolizes Manhattan quite like our iconic skyline. Here are some great vantage points for getting an unforgettable eyeful.

In Manhattan, the Empire State Building and the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center are no-brainers, but they’re head and shoulders above the rest for panoramic dazzle. If you like your city vistas with a drink in your hand, try the Lobby Lounge on the 35th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in the Time Warner building at Columbus Circle, or head downtown to the penthouse roof deck at Hotel on Rivington.

It’s tough to behold the Manhattan skyline in full effect from the inside. That’s where neighbors to the east and west come in. In Brooklyn, Brooklyn Bridge Park and Brooklyn Heights Promenade near Montague or Pierrepont Streets are skyline standouts. For dinner with Emerald City sparkle, River Cafe and low-key neighborhood spot Alma can’t be beat. In Queens, Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City offers terrific city views, and Penthouse 808 restaurant in the Ravel Hotel—also in LIC—earns its rooftop bragging rights.

Across the Hudson, New Jersey hotels take full advantage of the eastern exposure. You’ll find rooms with a serious view at the W Hoboken or the Hyatt Regency Jersey City. Exchange Place in Jersey City is an overall must for glorious, unobstructed gazing at downtown Manhattan. The Hoboken Ferry Terminal is another classic “wow” spot. But there’s no need to keep your feet on the ground to enjoy the skyline. The Staten Island Ferry showcases the Big Apple from just about every angle. And it’s free!
