Give Yourself Away: Share Your Experience and Help Kids Learn

OCTOBER 7, 2008

Helping kids get the best education is a great way to invest in the future.

Minds Matter is a not-for-profit organization that brings high-achieving high school students from low-income families together with dedicated mentors. The program develops students’ skills in academic and leadership areas in preparation for college by matching students with mentors for weekly sessions during the school year. Minds Matter volunteers come from diverse professional backgrounds including advertising, banking, consulting, education, law, and marketing.

Girls Write Now is a creative writing and mentoring organization for high school girls, run by a community of women. Authors, editors, educators, journalists, playwrights, publishers, advertising and PR professionals, literary agents and more provide a safe space for New York City's high school girls to develop their creative voices and explore writing careers.

In2Books is an eMentoring program for grades 3-5 that helps students with reading comprehension, writing and critical thinking skills. Volunteer Pen Pals can help out via the internet from wherever they happen to be.

To find more opportunities to give your time or donate to help kids get a great education, the Children’s Aid Society is another good place to start. Volunteering opportunities include mentoring and college and career prep programs.
