Greenest Apartment Buildings in Manhattan

APRIL 20, 2012

Every day is Earth Day at New York City’s most innovative, environment–and resident–friendly luxury apartment buildings. Below, a few of the city’s greenest.

The Visionaire–70 Little West Street
In Lower Manhattan’s Battery Park City, where amenity-packed residential buildings try to out-green one another, the award-winning 33-floor Visionaire condominium sweeps the category. Built in 2008 and designed by noted architecture firms SCLE and Pelli Clarke Pelli, Manhattan’s first LEED Platinum residence is wrapped in a terracotta rain-screen curtain wall with reflective low-energy insulated glass and integrated photovoltaic solar paneling. Its 251 apartments offer breathtaking Hudson River views through energy-efficient floor-to-ceiling windows (pre-wired for solar shades), and an endless list of amenities.

HL 23 – 515 West 23rd Street

How much more green can you get than having one of the city’s most innovative urban parks as your front yard? Completed in 2008, designed by California Architect Neil Denari and built to standards for LEED Gold certification, the 14-story HL 23 condominium is also one of West Chelsea’s most visually stunning buildings. Directly facing the High Line park, it offers 11 spacious full-floor and duplex apartments with panoramic views through an energy-efficient curtain wall system, full-height motorized shades for privacy and light control, and architect-designed interiors.

The Lucida–151 East 85th Street

The first LEED-certified condominium residence on the Upper East Side, The Lucida was designed by Cook + Fox and completed in 2009. Within its 21 floors of faceted, reflective glass are 122 spacious apartments with floor-to-ceiling glass panel windows and designer interiors. Water-efficient landscaping, energy-optimized mechanical systems, filtered fresh air and low-emission indoor materials get green points, but what puts The Lucida at the head of its class are amenities like skylit indoor pools, a wellness spa and an indoor playground.
