Hotspots: Finding FREE WiFi in New York City

AUGUST 12, 2008

Connex in the City: Free Wifi with no strings attached
In our endlessly mobile world, anywhere–anytime–access to the internet is becoming vital. As telecom companies attempt to best one another with fancy phones and complicated plans, high-speed wireless internet service ("WiFi") remains frustratingly tied to individual locations and services. While companies like Starbucks partner with T-mobile to offer free WiFi "hotspots" for their customers, a growing number of organizations are finding ways to bring WiFi to the masses.

The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation offers free WiFi access in selected parks and NYCwireless, a non-profit organization, operates free WiFi locations throughout the city as well. Downtown Alliance offers free WiFi service in a number of lower Manhattan locations or you can hop on the network at any branch of the New York Public Library.

Apple retail stores don't mind if you use their wireless network—they're hoping you'll be distracted by shiny objects in every direction. CBS Corporation provides a CBS Mobile zone between Times Square and Central Park South, and they're currently testing a partnership with the MTA. A new wave of startups like Fon are encouraging users to share their WiFi in exchange for being able to use the same network when they're out and about. And gWiFi hopes to be able to use Google Maps to list free hotspots. With a bit of advance planning, you may never have to worry about being wireless-less again.
