If By Sea: Commuting By Ferry

JULY 27, 2010

If your commute—or just your curiosity—takes you off Manhattan Isle, you can stay afloat instead of going underground with a flotilla of ferry choices.

Here’s a quick guide to getting on board.

Who owns the ferries?
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) runs the Staten Island Ferry. The rest, as listed below, are operated by independent companies.

Where do the ferries go?
The Staten Island Ferry operates between the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island and the Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan. Riding the ferry is free.

New York Water Taxi keeps busy shuttling folks between Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The Water Taxi also makes regular runs to Governor’s Island as well as Sandy Hook beach in New Jersey. It also offers an alternate way to get to Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, and Delta sponsors a free baseball taxi so you can save your green for hot dogs and beer. Also part of the Water Taxi empire is the IKEA Express shuttle and the laid-back Water Taxi Beach dance-and-DJ parties at various landings along the ferry’s route.

New York Waterway operates ferries between New York and several New Jersey locations including Jersey City, Weehawken and Hoboken.
Seastreak ferries operate between East 34th Street and Wall Street’s Pier 11 in Manhattan and Monmouth County, New Jersey.

You can get more information as well as schedules, fares and other facts from the NYC DOT.
