Neighborhood Update: Greenpoint

NOVEMBER 8, 2011

The newest version of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a list-topping residential and destination neighborhood, not a rent-refuge.

As evidenced by a recent feature in The L Magazine which placed it in the #1 spot in its “Brooklyn Neighborhood Power Rankings,” Greenpoint is a neighborhood on the move. In just a few short years it has gone from a somewhat sleepy residential Polish and Puerto Rican neighborhood with plenty of parks to an “edgy” hipster and artist refuge to a trendy, grown-up destination neighborhood with tree-lined sidewalks offering upscale boutiques, candle-lit bistros and quirky cafes.

After-dark hotspots like the laid-back pub Pencil Factory and restaurant/club Coco 66 bring fresh-faced, fashionable young nightcrawlers northward to listen to their favorite bands, drink and mingle in a decidedly un-divey atmosphere.

The newest Greenpoint wave (call it 3.0) includes the popular Veronica People’s Club (from the owners of equally popular East Village bar Heathers), The Diamond, The Manhattan Inn, and vast, shiny-new beer gardens t.b.d. and Spritzenhaus (from the owners of LES staple Spitzers Corner). On the foodie front, diners crowd into Five Leaves, Tent, Lobster Joint and the newly-opened Charlotte Patisserie. Cute-girl treasure-trove Dalaga and the Alter mini-empire join older vintage stores on the chic shopping strip of Franklin Street.

Can Greenpoint climb higher on the neighborhood hotness ladder? The G train needs to get its act together first but the oh-so-significant strollers have become a common sight, and big plans are in the works for waterfront development and ferry service, so there’s no telling what the future holds.
