Conde stakes out new Ground Zero digs; Garden lovers fear the end is near

Public garden supporters are concerned that a change in rules that protect the city’s community gardens will result in their disappearance. A recent protest in the East Village referred to an agreement—reached after the New York State Attorney General sued the city to block the sale of gardens to developers—that protected 500 city gardens. The agreement expires next month, and many are concerned that the gardens, which transformed hundreds of blighted vacant lots into vibrant green oases and significantly improved the life of surrounding neighborhoods, will be sold to developers.

Publishing giant Conde Nast has tentatively signed a deal to move from their current headquarters—considered to be ground zero for the fashion world—at 4 Times Square to a new address at 1 World Trade Center (formerly known as the Freedom Tower) when the 2.6-million-square-foot skyscraper is completed in 2014. Having the publisher of Vogue, the New Yorker and others on board would signal a much-needed turnaround for the troubled project and would boost the credibility of the Lower Manhattan district overall.
