Borough president offers suggestions to end Brooklyn bike lane chaos; NJ gov calls a halt to train tunnel project

A recent survey cited by Brooklyn Borough President Scott M. Stringer has raised the concern that chaos reigns in the city’s bike lanes. Though the lanes add significant value to city life, they could benefit from more control over pedestrians, cyclists and motorists who misuse them. The infractions mentioned include cars that park in the lanes, pedestrians who wander through them and wrong-way cyclists.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has called a halt to plans for a commuter train tunnel underneath the Hudson River connecting New York and New Jersey. According to Christie, the project that would have been the country’s largest public transit project exceeds his state’s ability to pay the rising costs involved. The most recent estimation that the tunnel—a pet project of the Governor’s predecessor, Jon S. Corzine—would require $2.5 billion more than its original cost of $8.7 billion, led to Mr. Christie’s decision to scrap the project.
