Residents seek calm near crazy Canal Street; Community groups ask court to halt Atlantic Yards construction.

New residential buildings are a sign that there is peace and quiet to be found near the busy commercial zone that is Canal Street. More residential addresses have appeared on quieter side streets nearby, and crackdowns on unfettered—some say obnoxious—street commerce may be creating a more livable vibe. The owner of a new 12-unit condo going up at 471 Washington Street at Canal explains, "You still get asked to buy a Rolex every few feet. But it has definitely slowed down." Other recent residential arrivals include the Zinc Building—which has a 475 Greenwich Street address—and Soho Mews on West Broadway about a half-block away from Canal Street.

A motion filed in New York State Supreme Court by neighborhood community groups aims to halt the controversial Atlantic Yards project in the Prospect Heights section of Brooklyn. The motion asks that construction be stopped until the project's developers respond to a court order asking them to reconsider the project's environmental impact now that its timeline has been significantly extended.
