New Developments in the News

OCTOBER 27, 2008

The Manhattan market hustles on and there's always a new way to use a bit of space if you get a little creative

At 534 West 42nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues, a slice of residential condo known as The Deuce—a nod to the 42nd street corridor's past as a hustler haven—has begun marketing. The neighborhood has long since cleaned up its act and the new residence calls itself the "biggest little building on 42nd street." Residents will get a roof terrace, 10 feet ceilings in principal rooms, private storage and outdoor space, keyed elevator access and a host of features and amenities to help them escape the modern Manhattan hustle.

The Signature Theater Company has signed on to provide three theater spaces in a Frank Gehry-designed addition to a residential tower, parking and more in the 55-story development planned for the block bounded by 42nd and 41st Streets, Dwyer and Tenth Avenues. Signature will, of course, benefit from loans obtained in the agreement and a big upgrade to their space and developers get a substantial zoning bonus by having an entertainment/cultural institution on board.

A hearing was held by the Landmark Preservation Commission to discuss moving the Tin building, which once held part of the Fulton Street Fish Market, to a location farther east, as well as a proposal for a 42 story hotel and condominium building to replace the industrial structure, much of which was destroyed by a fire in 1995. The new building would be the fishnet-fronted wonder that has been proposed to anchor a newly-developed section of the Pier 17 area of the South Street Seaport.
