Food in the Hood: Nosh Walks
If you really want to impress your foodie friends, be the one who can recommend a great ethnic dining spot in Staten Island, or where to get the best Brighton Beach Pierogis. You can start by joining Nosh Walks–New York Culinary Walking Tours for one of their weekly expeditions and nibble your way through New York City’s uptown and outer borough neighborhoods. Past food tours have included East Harlem (cuchifritos–”Puerto Rican soul food”, Mexican, French, Caribbean, and pizza), Astoria, Queens, “Bronx Bites,” and the “Borough Park Shmura Matzoh Special,” among many others. Meeting spots vary with each tour’s location, so check the schedule in advance. You can also arrange custom Nosh Walks for groups, and they’ll tailor tours to your requests.

Founder Myra Alperson got her start with a bicycle food tour company, then co-published The Food Lover’s Guide to the Real New York, with her partner in that venture. Nosh Walks grew out of her food-lover’s newsletter, NoshNews. Her latest New York food-in-the-hood guide is Nosh New York: The Food Lover’s Guide to New York City’s Most Delicious Neighborhoods.
