Safe House: High-Tech Security Systems Are Always on the Job

APRIL 23, 2009

A growing arsenal of high-tech tools keeps city nests safe and sound.

Your building's security system should be high on the list of important details when choosing where to live. As the first line of defense, the eyes still have it: A doorman at the very least—sometimes a full staff—are generally on duty at better residences.

Unitone supplies a color monitoring screen and intercom system that keeps eyes and ears on building visitors and includes automatic concierge callback, on-screen messaging and notification, emergency announcements, intrusion, smoke, fire, and medical alarms.

Wireless motion sensors are another way to keep an eye on your home. In systems like the ones offered by Kraus, video and motion sensors can be set up to dial your number or any other number you choose. Another layer of protection: Access control with swipe cards. Keys can be duplicated, but a magnetic card-swipe device—like the ones that have been used for years in hotels—keeps a record of who's entering and leaving.

The most futuristic entry systems use biometric identification panels, which uses a unique feature, such as a retinal scan, to identify the person attempting to gain access. The systems can be set up to allow access for different people, so a nanny or house-sitter can get in, but unwelcome guests will strike out–and stay out.
