The John Dory Oyster Bar: Another Try for A Classic Seafood Spot

MARCH 4, 2011

A craving for fresh seafood is yet another reason to check into—or just visit—the Ace Hotel.

The recently reopened John Dory Oyster Bar joins the Breslin and No. 7 Sub Shop as the latest eatery to attach itself to the hip boho boutique Ace Hotel in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Just off the lobby (think SoHo House minus the attitude, plus taxidermy), past the Opening Ceremony mini-store and a micro-art-gallery, the spacious, bustling establishment resembles an old school seafood restaurant from a time that predated boutique hotels.

Ken Friedman, April Bloomfield and Josh Even, the team behind the rebirth (and its first incarnation, as well as the wildly-successful Spotted Pig) have made pricing more palatable and refined the menu to include classics (an enormous raw bar, oyster pan roast) as well as innovative small plates like chorizo stuffed squid with smoked tomato. Which may explain the near-legendary wait time at peak hours. Fortunately there’s an equally bustling bar running the length of the corner room, so you can sip cocktails or a glass of wine and watch the city scene on both sides of the glass. Wait time is reasonable on off-peak times and weekdays, though, and the restaurant’s first official reviews (NY Times) have been good enough to entice disgruntled foodies who eschewed the old John Dory back to the new one to order up a few dozen.
