This Week in NYC Living

MAY 14, 2013

Some of the city’s best outdoor celebrations happen this week, plus a great reason to stay above ground on your commute and ride your bike to work.

City-wide

Bike to Work Day 2013
Give your health and the environment a boost and two-wheel it to work (if you don’t already do so) on Friday, May 17. If you need added encouragement, there will be “fueling stations” featuring gourmet coffee, breakfast, stickers and bike lights throughout the city in the AM, and a big after-work party in the evening will feature more food and drink, fashion shows and more.
Friday, May 17; see site for fueling stations, afterparty info and more.

NYC X Design
This super-gathering of the city’s finest design institutions, including museums, stores, architecture and design firms and designers themselves promises to satisfy anyone with an appetite for the greatest, newest and most innovative in the world of design. The anchor event is the annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), being held at the Jacob Javits Center from May 18-21.
May 10-21, see site for events and venues

Park Slope, Prospect Park

Great Googa Mooga
This (relatively) new addition to the long list of reasons to celebrate Brooklyn, food, music and the beauty of Prospect Park was a runaway success last spring. Expect hundreds of opportunities to sample the wares of New York’s top restaurants and leading wineries and breweries, listen to top musical acts, dine, dance and drink with your friends at imaginatively-themed parties and events.
May 17, 18, 19; see site for locations and events.
Prospect Park, Brooklyn
Tickets: $54 and up.

Considered one of the foremost contemporary artists of his generation, El Anatsui is known for his intricate sculptures made of recycled materials mostly collected near his home in Nigeria. Broken Bridge II is his largest work to date.

Seventh Annual Dance Parade and Festival
This annual outdoor event provides a showcase for the city’s top dance groups while bringing a riot of color, song and celebration to the streets of Greenwich Village. Join in the dance or just watch from the sidelines–but be warned: It won’t be easy to keep your feet on the ground. After gathering between 22nd and 21st between Park and Fifth Avenue, the Parade will kick off at 1pm and boogie its way down Broadway to a review Grandstand in Astor Place, ending in a massive DanceFest in Tompkins Square Park, complete with free dance lessons.
