What's Going on this Week

JULY 6, 2011

The city’s parks make it possible to do just about anything without having to spend time indoors.

Hipnic on the High Line
This informal collective of creative urban fun-seekers is on its third year (NYTimes) of gathering like-minded souls in one of the city’s loveliest new parks, led by entrepreneur-about-town Geoff “Fluff” Grandberg, to enjoy the summer sunset, make music, eat, drink, and be merry. This week’s theme is “castles in the sky crafter,” in which castles, banners, and instruments will be made.
Tuesday, July 12, 7-10 p.m.
15th Street, up on the High Line, lower level

Figment Mini-Golf Course
The Figment arts organization has been hard at work bringing creativity to Governor’s Island; The much-loved mini-golf course returns, with 14 holes. This year, the course-slash-art-project is built around the theme “Bugs and Features,” in the broadest sense of the word (think spiders, bees, a giant fly swatter, classic arcade games and much, much more).
Public park hours: Fridays from 10-4 p.m., Saturdays from 10-6 p.m., and Sundays from 10-6 p.m., from May 27 to September 25.

Bastille Day on 60th Street

Learn about travel and tourist destinations, browse beauty and shopping booths, enrich your cultural knowledge and enjoy live music, mime, a citroën car show, a raffle (win a trip to Paris!) and more. Fun events for kids—like a Pétanque contest and face painting—too!

Art After Dark at the Guggenheim
Art After Dark is a new series of seasonal events at the Guggenheim Museum for members and their guests, centered around a special exhibition or program at the museum. Live Music Round-Up
If you’re willing to road-trip it to the sticks to awaken memories of ’70s progressive massives Yes and Styx, they’re performing at CMAC in Canandaigua, New York on July 7. Fast forward a couple of decades and hit New Jersey for Soundgarden at Prudential Center on July 8. Decade-spanning singer-songwriter Bill Callahan, A.K.A. Smog will be at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and Animal Collective (with Black Dice) will be performing to a packed park as part of Celebrate Brooklyn. If you like a little dance with your song, the PS1 Warm Up series has begun; this weekend’s edition features Four Tet, SBTRKT and more.
