What's Going on this Week: New Year's Eve edition

DECEMBER 30, 2009

Join the crowds, join the celebration or run away on New Year’s Eve.

If you’d like to close out the decade among many, many friendly faces, Times Square is where you’ll find them. The usual advice: Arrive early (If you get there by 6pm you can watch the ball go up). Dress warmly. And don’t expect to find a bathroom. The best viewing spots are on Broadway from 43rd to 50th Streets and along Seventh Avenue up to 59th Street.

If you’d rather keep things a bit more intimate, here are a few suggestions.

Tavern on the Green: The old New York institution will be closing its doors soon, but you can bid the legend–and 2009–farewell with a view of the gardens and fireworks of Central Park. A $135 general admission ticket includes a gourmet buffet dinner, open bar, and continental breakfast.

New Year’s Eve Midnight Run: If you’re athletically inclined, join some like-minded souls for fireworks, a 4M race/fun run, and more in Central Park for a celebration you won’t have to sleep off the next day.

New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace: Harry Smith, Judy Collins and other guests invite you to ring in the New Year with music, readings, meditations and candle light. There’s an early performance (7pm) as well.

Bring your friends and investigate cavernous loft spaces, flying trapeze acts, friendly crowds of faeries, gypsies and marching band enthusiasts and the Brooklyn sunrise at the always-unusual New Lost City New Year’s Eve party.
