between West 81st Street & West 82nd Street View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 440 West End Avenue by Carter Horsley

This very handsome 17-story building was erected in 1928 and converted to a cooperative in 1984. The building contains 93 apartments.

The brown-and-red brick building has a one-story limestone base, limestone quoins at its comers and handsome pilasters on the two floors near the base and two floors near the top. The building, which has a canopied entrance, also has a very nice, rooftop, watertank enclosure.

It permits protruding air-conditioners.

This neighborhood excellent shopping as well as many interesting restaurants and a local subway station is nearby at 79th Street and Broadway. Riverside Park is one block away.
