This very attractive, red-brick building at 234 North 9th Street in Williamsburg was erected in 1915 by Sophia Zablowski who used it to house her Polish babka bakery.  The building is known as Sophia Lofts.

It was converted to 11 residential condominium apartments in 2007 by Horrigan Development.

Standard Architects of which John Comarty is a principal was the architect for the conversion.

It is also known as 48-56 Roebling Street.

Bottom Line

This residential conversion of a handsome industrial building in Williamsburg offers residents multi-paned windows, brick walls, steel doors and timber beams and an attractive roof deck just a few blocks from McCarren Park and the Bedford Avenue L subway station.

Description

The building has a gated half-story base and a dark brown brick façade with large multi-paned windows.  There are two fire-escapes on the second and third floors that have ladders that go up to the roof. 

The building’s cornice is supported by handsome double brackets.

Apartment 3/d is a one-bedroom duplex with a 17-foot-long entry foyer that leads to 10-foot-wide open kitchen and a 20-foot-long living/dining room and a spiral staircase to the 25-foot-long roof terrace.

Apartment 1B is a one-bedroom duplex with a 14-foot-long living/dining room and a 12-foot-long open kitchen and a 14-foot-long bedroom on the lower level.

Apartment 1D is a one-bedroom duplex with a 7-step-up entry foyer that leads to a 10-foot-wide living room that opens onto a 12-foot-wide kitchen and the lower level has a large storage ages, a 17-foot-long home office and the bedroom.

Apartment 3C is a one-bedroom duplex with an entry foyer that leads past a spiral staircase to a 16-foot-long living/dining room adjacent to an open 12-foot-wide open kitchen.  The upper level has a 10-foot-long bedroom and a 196-square-foot terrace.

Apartment 2B is a one-bedroom unit with a 16-foot-wide living/dining room and a 12-foot-wide open kitchen.
