The Stagg I, 69 Stagg Street: Review and Ratings

between Lorimer Street & Leonard Street View Full Building Profile

Review of 69 Stagg Street by Carter Horsley

69 Stagg Street is one of two addresses that make up The Stagg I building. The other is 63 Stagg Street. It is also one of two buildings designed by Robert M. Scarano Jr. for Isaac Schwartz in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The Stagg I is a mid-block building between Lorimer and Leonard streets.

The four-story building has 8 condominium apartments and it was built in 2005.

The other building Mr. Scarano designed for Mr. Schwartz is around the corner at 52 Ten Eyck Street.  It is a mid-block building and is known as The Stagg II.  The buildings are similar in design except that this one is three times as wide as the other one.

Mr. Scarano also designed a third building on the same block at 78 Ten Eyck Street for Lipe Gross.  It is on the south corner of Leonard Street.  The lower floors of that building are similar to those at The Stagg I and The Stagg II but its top is much different with a mansard treatment.

Description

The first floor of this push-pull, red-brick building is shorter than the upper floors that are quite high and almost give this building the air of a grand English country manor house.

Although basically a four-story structure, this building has a quite complex massing as the top floor is setback unevenly and the middle and east sections that project to the building line have uneven rooflines that add to the building’s interesting sense of energy - as does the fact that they are both setback horizontally a bit.

All of this shifting and juggling is of interest but unfortunately ruined by the pale-green top at the section at the west end that also has two small windows vertically whereas the other two “front” sections have one tall window.

Amenities

The building permits pets.

Apartments

Apartment 4B is a two-bedroom triplex unit with a 26-foot-long living room with a 13-foot-long open kitchen with an island, a large patio and a 13-foot-long bedroom with a small balcony on the lower level, a 27-foot-long bedroom on the second floor and a 13-foot-wide office with a large patio on the third level.

Apartment 1A is a duplex unit with 2,370 square feet including about 400 square feet of garden space and a private patio.  The lower level has a bedroom, a washer/dryer room, and a large media room with the patio and the upper level has a living room that opens onto a garden, an open kitchen, a dining area and a second bedroom.
