between York Avenue & East End Avenue View Full Building Profile

Carter Horsley
Review of 501 East 87th Street by Carter Horsley

This handsome, white-brick, rental apartment building was erected in 1968 and was one of the pioneer projects in the redevelopment of York Avenue in the area near Carl Schurz Park to the east.

The building's façade is modulated with dark spandrels, several columns of balconies and numerous terraces beneath its decorative, enclosed rooftop watertank.

The 22-story building has 11 apartments on most of its floors and most have fireplaces. It has a glass-enclosed, rooftop pool and gym, a garage, a 24-hour doorman, sidewalk landscaping and an attractive lobby. The building is pet-friendly and has central air-conditioning.

Some apartments have fireplaces.

Bus service is convenient although subways are not nearby.

The quiet neighborhood is popular with families because of the proximity of Carl Schurz Park and several excellent private schools.

The building, which has about 179 apartments, is owned by the Solow Building Company.
